This event is designed for newly admitted graduate students who are beginning their study this upcoming fall. Treat this as an orientation/open house specifically designed for new graduate students. It is a chance for you to take care of any last minute business before classes begin.

At GSSE, you can accomplish the following:

Obtain ID cards and purchase parking passes (You can order online at http://www.strose.edu/campus/campus_security/parking)

Go on a campus tour (offered every half hour, beginning at 3:30pm)

Buy books and supplies at the Campus Store

Visit the Student Solutions Center to make payment arrangements, check class locations, confirm schedules, etc.

May Commencement

Here at Saint Rose we just celebrated spring commencement. We had over 900 undergraduate and graduate students earn their degrees and advanced certificates. We want to wish them well as they enter the next stage in their lives.

Our commencement was graced by two tremendous speakers, Michelle Rhee and Senator Chuck Schumer, who both offered timely and inspiring messages. You can read more about our commencement here.

Summer Semester

Graduate summer courses in our Schools of Education, Math and Science, and Arts and Humanities begin this Monday, May 23. We want to wish good luck to new students beginning their studies this summer as well as continued success to those students using the summer to move through their programs.

Fall Application Deadlines

June 1 is the preferred application deadline for many of our programs. Please contact our office if you have any questions about your program of interest. June 1 is also the deadline for turning in graduate assistant applications. Supervisors like to hire their graduate assistants as early as possible, so please turn these applications in!

Art Exhibition

From June 3 to September 2, the Esther Massry Art Gallery at The College of Saint Rose will be holding its second annual Karene Faul Alumni Exhibition. Come to the gallery to see some amazing pieces of art produced by Saint Rose alumni.

School of Business

Saint Rose trustee, Richard J. Huether, has recently made a sizable donation to our School of Business campaign. We will be creating a new space for our School of Business, which will be known as the Huether School of Business thanks to his generous gift. Find out more here.

Happy Spring, everyone! Winter in the Northeast has been brutal, and I am sure we can all agree that it is nice to say goodbye to the snow. I just want to provide a few updates from the office of Graduate Admissions at The College of Saint Rose:

April 15: This is the fall application deadline for our programs in School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, and College Student Services Administration. You can apply online here.

May 1: This is the graduate scholarship application deadline. We give a select number of merit-based scholarships to incoming graduate students for the fall semester. You will only need to fill out one application to be considered for all of our scholarships. You can download the application here.

May 14: This is the date of commencement, which is being held at the Times Union Center. Learn everything you need to know here.

May 23: This is the first day of classes for the Summer I semester. Taking classes over the summer is a great way to make up course work or to try and move through your program quicker.

June 1: This is the preferred application deadline for our programs other than Counseling, School Psychology, and Communication Sciences and Disorders. By preferred, I mean that we will still accept applications for most programs after this deadline, but we cannot guarantee that we can provide you with a decision in time to register and get set for the fall semester.

June 1: Again? Well, June 1 is also the application deadline to be considered for graduate assistant positions. There are a number of positions that we award for the fall semester. You can find about more about this program here.

As you can see, even though the spring semester is winding down, there is always something around the corner. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, and enjoy the spring!

CCIM: A Profile

The Center for Communications and Interactive Media: A Profile

Opened in the Spring of 2010, the Center for Communications and Interactive Media, or CCIM, is a state-of-the-art facility that is home to our Communications and Music Technology programs. This 20,000 square feet facility, located at 996 Madison Ave, provides students with the cutting edge technology necessary to succeed in today's ever-changing world.

What Will I Find There?

HDTV/Photojournalism Room

This space includes a control room, green screen, news set, talk set, and complete digital recording equipment.

Showcase Studio

This performance space is designed to showcase bands, combos, poets, and live talks. With cafe seating or a standing audience, this studio is linked via audio and video to our control room, and can accommodate professional recording and programmable state lighting.

Radio Saint Rose

This internet radio studio houses an audio production control room, interview space, post production lab, and classroom with an isolated sound booth.

Music Performance Suites

The CCIM houses two professional music recording and control rooms. These studios include amps, mics, pianos, drums, and the most professional mixing and mastering equipment available.

Other

The CCIM also offers a news bureau, viewing/production room, and multimedia computer labs.

Diversity at Saint Rose

On December 8, the Affirmative Action Committee shared the results of their diversity climate survey. This survey was administered to students in November, 2009. Faculty, administration, and staff took the survey in March, 2010.

Shai Butler, Assistant to the President on Diversity, opened with some general comments before turning the presentation over to a panel of Saint Rose undergraduate students, who took turns responding to the following questions:

What does Saint Rose do well when it comes to diversity?

On the other hand, what improvements could Saint Rose make?

The 5 student panel represented a diverse mixture of backgrounds, including men and women who have roles in campus organizations: A.L.A.N.A., Identity Club, the Women's Initiative, and Student Council. While each student shared their own responses, there was something of a general consensus. They are proud of the steps that Saint Rose has taken to open up the discussion on diversity. The students also celebrated the institution's encouragement of students to celebrate their identity. But, they also concluded that there is much work to do and that a conversation is merely the beginning.

Panelists from the Affirmative Action Committee then spoke about the survey; its methodology, creation, and distribution. A student member shared student responses, while Dr. Steven Hoff, of the School Psychology department, discussed the survey responses by faculty, staff, and administration. In general, survey findings echoed the remarks of the student panel; there is a lot to celebrate, but there is more work to be done from every layer of the institution.

A final report of the climate of diversity, bearing presidential approval, will be published sometime this spring.

The Thelma P. Lally School of Education is among the most prominent buildings on the Saint Rose campus, as well as being the home of our School of Education. Let's find out a little bit more about this exciting education center.

The Lally School of Education is a national model for the training of teachers, counselors, speech therapists, and school leaders. The building is named after Thelma P. Lally, a benefactor of Saint Rose. You'll find out more about this amazing woman in the first-floor lobby of the building graced with her name.

Patricia Standish Curriculum Library

The Emery Educational and Clinical Services Center

This Center, which also houses the Pauline K. Winkler Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, offers a wide variety of services including literacy tutoring, psycho-educational evaluations, speech-language evaluations and treatment, audiological evaluations, and many others.

This fully-functional nursery school offers children an inviting, safe place to explore, discover, learn and grow.

Project ASPIRE

The College of Saint Rose has been awarded a 5 year, 1.5 million dollar grant to form project ASPIRE. The purpose of ASPIRE (Adolescence Special Education Preparation for Inclusive and Reflective Educators) is to:

"Radically alter the training of new special education teachers to meet current special education teacher shortages, particularly in high-needs urban inclusive middle and high school classrooms."

The Fall Recruiting Calendar

There are a lot of universities and colleges out there, with each one offering a host of programs and opportunities. Our last post discussed the decision-making process that goes into attending graduate school. So maybe you have decided that you are definitely interested. One way to learn more about graduate institutions and programs is to attend your school’s graduate fair.

Many schools, particularly those that do not offer graduate programs, offer a fall graduate fair. At this event, representatives from schools across the state, and even country, will be available. They can help answer your questions, take your contact information, and provide school literature.

What to ask Admissions Representatives

About.com offers list of questions to ask representatives from different schools. The following list is paraphrased:

Admissions Office-The goal of an admissions office is to help prospective students through the inquiry and application process. Admissions representatives should be your first point of contact when asking questions about programs, requirements, financial aid opportunities, etc. Admissions offices want to speak to prospective students, so take advantage of them.

Faculty-Ultimately, the faculty in a particular program can speak directly to the philosophy of that program. Are you a good fit? What sort of students are the faculty looking for? An admissions office can often point you to the appropriate faculty contact. Attending an Open House where faculty are present creates an exciting opportunity, as well.

Current Students-You can gain valuable insight into a school and program from current or former students. These alumni can talk in great detail about courses, institutional resources, work load, scheduling, etc. If a friend of a friend attended a school you are interested in, reach out to them!

Difference Between Social Work and Mental Health Counseling (From AllPsychologySchools.com)

Social workers are often referred to as the liaison between the patient or client and the community. Social workers help people deal with their relationships with others; solve their personal, family, and community problems; and grow and develop as they learn to cope with or shape the social and environmental forces affecting daily life.

Mental health counselors can practice independently in some states, although most are employed in clinics and hospitals. They perform individual, couples/family, and group therapy, and may assist psychologists with testing and other forms of treatment.

What does it take to be school counselor? And what is a school counselor, anyway? The American School Counselor Association lists the following definition:

Professional school counselors are certified/licensed educators with the minimum of a master’s degree in school counseling and are uniquely qualified to address the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students.

While this definition is very broad, the following examples provide a clearer context of the work that a school counselor will find themselves immersed in. Again, from the ASCA:

-Professional school counselors incorporate organizational processes and tools that are concrete, clearly delineated, and reflective of the school’s needs

-The school guidance curriculum is delivered throughout the school's overall curriculum and is systematically presented by professional school counselors in collaboration with other professional educators in K-12 classroom and group activities.

-Professional school counselors coordinate ongoing systemic activities designed to help students establish personal goals and develop future plans.

Career Outlook and Salary Information (from Education-Portal.com)

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects that employment of counselors will grow faster than the average for all occupations through 2014…The number of school counselors employed is expected to grow as student enrollments at postsecondary schools and colleges increase and as a growing number of states require that elementary schools employ counselors

A Student’s Perspective

There is no set routine for a school counselor. There will always be a new challenge or opportunity waiting. The following are a few examples (from www.jobprofiles.org) of how a typical student might make use of their school’s guidance counselor:

Home Release. More times than not, the stress of a student is not from the time that's spent at school, but from the time that is spent at home. The job of a high school counselor, or any counselor for that matter, is to redirect any unhealthy activity into something that is positive for the student.

The Information Is There. High school counselors are trusted with very valuable information that can not only help you but guide you as well. Very few know exactly what classes they need to attain what they want out of school. It is the job of your local school counselor to make sure that you receive that information.

The College Key. As you begin to work your way up the educational ladder, college becomes one of the most important elements in life. High school guidance counselors encourage and assist in getting you ready for college. From helping you fill out applications to transferring you high school progress to the college or colleges of your choice, a school counselor is there for you.

The Right Guidance. High school guidance counselors do not try to force you into any area of life or in school. They are there as a guide to inform of all your choices, not to persuade you.

School Psychology

What is a School Psychologist?

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) describes the profession as follows:

“School psychologists work with students individually and in groups. They also develop programs to train teachers and parents about effective teaching and learning strategies, techniques to manage behavior at home and in the classroom, working with students with disabilities or with special talents, addressing abuse of drugs and other substances, and preventing and managing crises… They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students that strengthen connections between home and school.”

Furthermore, they list five main components to School Psychology:

1. Consultation

2. Evaluation

3. Intervention

4. Prevention
5. Research and Planning

The Job Market

NASP and AllPsychologySchools.com have this to say,

“It is believed that a majority of current practitioners will be reaching retirement age within the next ten years, hence opening the door for a new generation of school psychologists. According to US News and World Report, school psychology continues to be one of the “best careers” for 2008.”

“In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that school psychology will be one of the fastest growing careers through 2014.”

School Psychology Versus School Counseling

Again, from NASP:

“In the school setting, counselors typically work with the total school population regarding a variety of issues – family and academic problems, career planning, course schedules and problem solving around course selection and scheduling, etc.”

“Relative to counselors, school psychologists are more likely to have training in behavioral analysis, mental health screening and diagnosis, research methods (and application of research to classroom practices), and specific disability areas.”

“School psychologists may overlap the duties of counselors and social workers, and often will work jointly with these other professionals by co-leading social skills groups and jointly serving on crisis support teams.”

School Psychology at the College of Saint Rose

Our graduate program at Saint Rose consists of 69 credits, which includes supervised field experiences in practicum and internship settings. The program provides students with an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates school psychology, educational psychology, counseling, and special education.

Our program follows a cohort model, and as such, only admits students in the fall semester. The application deadline is February 15. Beyond normal application requirements, applicants to the School Psychology program will attend an admissions workshop, which includes group and individual interviews and a writing exercise.

Special Education

Being a special education teacher can be among the most rewarding careers you could seek, but it is not for everyone. Sue Watson, for About.com, posits ten questions that every potential special education teacher should ask of her or himself. To paraphrase these questions:

In New York State, certification as a teacher of students with disabilities cannot come on its own. That is, if you want to teach special education to students in grades 1 through 6, you must also hold certification as a generalist teacher in grades 1-6. Or, if you want to teach students with disabilities at the middle and high school level, you must be also certified to teach a particular content.

Becoming a special education teacher requires a full understanding of education foundations, psychology and development, and curriculum and assessment. Because of this, special education teachers require the same training and education as generalist classroom teachers, plus a deeper understanding of special education issues and laws. Furthermore, special education teachers have to understand the relationships between teaching students with disabilities, the content, and generalist education.

Programs at Saint Rose

Saint Rose has a number of graduate programs that leads to certification as a teacher of students with disabilities. They include:

1. Dual Degree: these programs lead to a Master of Science in Education and initial certification as a classroom generalist teacher and as a teacher of students with disabilities.

2. Special Education: these graduate programs offer a Master of Science in Education and initial certification as a teacher of students with disabilities for students already certified in early childhood, childhood, and adolescent education.

3. Professional: this program is designed for students already certified in special education who want a deeper understanding in their field and to fulfill professional certification requirements for New York State.

4. Certification-Only: this 15 credit certificate program is only available for students who already possess a master’s degree in education.

Being a Teacher

The College of Saint Rose believes in the profound influence and possibilities of education to guide and promote the intellectual and human development of people in a diverse society. Do you believe in this? Have you though about becoming a teacher?

We would like to highlight three programs that prepare students to become effective teachers; Early Childhood Education, Childhood Education, and Adolescence Education

Early Childhood Education (Certification Birth-Grade 2)

This 45 credit graduate program is designed to prepare students seeking initial certification and help them to become reflective practitioners and creators of a thriving learning environment.

Graduate of the master's program are qualified to seek employment as pre-k-grade 2 classroom teachers in public and private elementary schools; as educators and/or administrators in nursery schools, child care and Head Start settings; as professionals in state agencies; as consultants to private agencies; and, as editors/writers of children's books and materials.

Childhood Education (Certification Grades 1-6)

This 43 credit graduate program combines classroom, laboratory, and field experiences to help prepare reflective, scholarly, caring educational professionals.

Graduates of the master's program will take with them to elementary schools a number of traits and qualities. These include; professionalism, communication skills, knowledge of curriculum and best practices, ability to plan and organize, responsiveness to all students, and the ability to integrate technology into the classroom.

Adolescence Education (Certification Grades 7-12)

This 40 credit program links content, theory, and practice to certify teachers in the following content areas: Biology, Business and Marketing, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Spanish.

Graduate of the master's program are experts of content and pedagogy, and more than ready to face the dynamic environment found in the middle and high schools across the state.

What Does it Take to Become Certified?

1. State-Approved Teacher Education Program: The College of Saint Rose is approved by both the New York State Board of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

2. Field Experience: These observation hours must be completed prior to student teaching. At Saint Rose, these hours are embedded within graduate courses.

3. Non-Credit Workshops: These classes meet only once and are offered throughout the semester. Topics covered include violence prevention and substance abuse.

4. Student Teaching: At Saint Rose, students will spend an entire semester working with veteran teachers across the Capital District. Each student is given two placements at different grade levels, to provide the most varied experience possible. Student teaching takes place after all graduate coursework has been completed.

5. NYSTCE Exams: New York State Teachers have to pass several exams prior to obtaining certification; our programs will help you prepare for these exams.
